“Where the History of Japanese Ski Resorts Began” 🎿🏔️
SNOW MONKY
Hidden within the dramatic cliffs of Yokoyu River Valley in northern Nagano, Jigokudani Monkey Park, or “Hell Valley,” draws visitors from around the world. Set at 850 meters in altitude, this remarkable park endures harsh winters with over a meter of snow and temperatures below -10°C. Since 1964, it has offered a rare chance to observe Japanese macaques in their natural habitat, famous for their unique habit of bathing in hot springs. Featured internationally in LIFE magazine in 1970 and celebrated during the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics, these “snow monkeys” make Jigokudani an unforgettable destination for nature lovers and adventurers alike.

Oldest Single-Seat Lift" 🎿❤️
The history of ski lifts in Japan can be traced back to this very place. It’s no exaggeration to say that the legacy of ski lifts in Japanese ski resorts started with the skilled craftsmen who built the first lift at the ski resort adjacent to the TOJI.ba MATSUKAWAKAN. This single-seater lift, meticulously maintained every year, is still in operation today—a true legend, a living legacy.
There’s one simple reason why this lift has been preserved as a heritage piece: the breathtaking view that awaits you once you take the ride. As you ascend towards the summit, take a moment to glance back. You’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the Hokushin Five Peaks—the iconic Mount Iizuna, Mount Togakushi, Mount Kurohime, Mount Myoko, and Mount Madarao, all standing proudly alongside the majestic Hakuba Range. On special days, you might even witness a sea of clouds rolling across the landscape.
Here lies a special lift where you can truly feel the beginning of Japan’s ski culture: the country’s oldest single-seat lift. This one-person lift, still running strong, is more than just a relic—it’s a living legacy, offering a unique experience to all who ride it.
This lift is not just a way to get up the mountain; it feels like a bridge between the past and the future. As you ascend slowly and quietly, you become one with nature. The crisp wind brushes against your face, the clear blue sky above seems endless, and the breathtaking scenery unfolds below. It’s a moment where your heart is touched by the serenity and beauty of the surroundings.
Embedded in this lift is the “spirit” of all those who have cherished it over the years. The dreams, hopes, and determination of skiers who have come before are infused into every ride. And once you take your seat, you’ll feel that spirit resonate within you, as if their energy is passed on to you.
This lift, filled with the warmth of Japan’s ski heritage, is a true legacy—a symbol of tradition and love for skiing. It will surely leave you with unforgettable memories. ⛷️🎿
