At Matsukawakan, we direct the hot spring, discovered approximately 800 years ago, straight from the source to the spout. Our alkaline hot spring offers a rich fragrance and a smooth texture, allowing you to fully enjoy its natural benefits. Although the spring water has a temperature of about 70°C, we adjust it without adding water by utilizing the difference in elevation. Adding water to this precious gift of nature diminishes its valuable components, so we take various measures to avoid this. From the amount of water flowing into the baths to the depth, size, and careful management of the source, we take great care in preserving the integrity of our hot spring.
“Tojiba” is written as 「湯治場」 in Japanese characters, and its origin comes from the phrase “a place where hot springs heal the body.” In Japan, the bathing culture has been passed down for over 1,000 years. Interestingly, until about 100 years ago, steam baths (saunas) were more common than hot spring baths in Japan.
